The Buddha taught many different meditation techniques as he himself experimented with many different techniques before he reached enlightenment. He is said to have taught this simple breathing meditation which you can use either as a meditation or as a pre-meditation which will help you to improve concentration and quieten the monkey mind.
First sit in your meditation position making yourself comfortable. Next bring your attention to your breathing, either the sensation of each breath coming in through your nostrils, the sensation of the breath over your lips or the rising and falling of your stomach as you breath in and out. As you inhale count 1, 2, 3 and so on before before breathing out. Count to a number you can easily manage but aim for the count of 7 or higher if this is manageable. Next aim for the same count as you exhale. Repeat counting with each in and out breath until you reach feelings of inner-peace and well-being.
When you begin to experience feelings of inner-peace and well-being hold on to these feelings for as long as possible. When these feelings pass bring your concentration back to your breaths and begin counting with each breath as before until feelings of inner peace and well-being return. Again hold on to these feelings for as long as possible. You can meditate using this meditation technique for as long as you feel comfortable but we recommend 20 minutes. Its OK if you can't manage this, we also have other meditation techniques posted on our blog which you may find interesting. You can find them by clicking the Meditation label at the bottom of this post.
