Why do People Meditate? People meditate for a number of different reasons. As modern life has become more and more stressful, some people meditate simply to relief stress and tension from the body. Others may meditate for religious purposes, Buddhist are required to meditate daily as part of their religion. For some meditation is a gate way for spiritual development and growth. Further still meditation can be seen as a path to personal development and growth. What ever your reason for meditating, meditation can be of great benefit to your life and well-being.
How do I meditate? There are a number of different ways to meditate. You should experiment with different styles and techniques and find the style that suites you best. Someone you know may swear by a meditation technique, but what may work best for someone else may not be so good for you. There are many ways to cook an egg and no way is better than the other. If you prefer a pouched egg why fry it? Remember we are all individuals and as individuals you should find the meditation style that best suits you.
I can't do this, my mind won't relax. One of the biggest problems people face with meditation is the mind won't shut down. Your inner voice may tell you "This is boring", "You can't do this, you haven't got the time", "I want to this instead." This is perfectly normal and is nothing to worry about. Buddhist call this the monkey mind and in time you can learn to dismiss this inner voice and learn to just observe it, without giving such thoughts any energy. Its possible to reach a state of no-mind, where you have very few or no thoughts at all but this takes a long time to reach and will also depend on your meditation technique. Spiritualists use visual meditations that allow their minds to open up for communication with the spirit world. Eastern religions although use a number of different meditation techniques, some will meditate to reach a no-mind state. I personally like to use different meditation techniques all the time for the same reason that I don't have the same meal to eat for my dinner everyday. After all variety is the spice of life.
Am I meditating right? There are a number of different sensations you may feel while meditating. You may feel tingling around your head, you may see visions in your minds eye. Your breathing may appear to slow right down and appear to stop. Or you may feel a tremendous high. You may feel all of these with each meditation or you may not. Meditation is above all a relaxation and its how you feel throughout your day that really counts. You should be aiming for peace. Being at peace with you mind is being at peace with the world. Being able to let go of negative thoughts will be of great benefit to not only yourself, but to those around you also. As meditation is a relation, don't try to hard, just relax and go with the flow.
